Spondylitis Causes

In Spondylitis, there is inflammation in the lower part of the spine, including the vertebral bony structures and the joints between them.

  • It’s not known exactly what causes spondylitis but according to the reports in many cases, we can observe a link with a unique genetic component termed as HLA-B27.

According to the researchers, 8 out of 10 people with spondylitis carry a gene which is referred as human leukocyte antigen B27 (HLA-B27).

But there is nothing to worry much! Having this gene doesn’t mean you will also have spondylitis. It’s calculated that almost eight out of 100 people have the HLA-B27 gene, but they are not affected.

  • If there is a family history of this condition or any similar issue, then the next generation is more likely to suffer.
  • Some other nongenetic factors which are associated with spondylitis include:

Osteoarthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis, TB etc.

According to many medical experts, there is a possible connection between spondylitis and traumatic injury to the spine. Researchers are still working to know that if there is any role of this injury which leads to the formation of spondylitis.

Other causative factors:

Previous wear and tear of joints and tissues, which may show spondylitis effects.

  • Inadequate dietary intake, excessive consumption of junk foods.
  • Smoking and excessive intake of alcohol.
  • Several spinal problems such as degenerative disc disease or spinal stenosis etc.
