Tendonitis is when the tendons or the tissue that attaches muscles and bone become inflamed due to overuse. Tendonitis is usually a painful, recurring condition that can worsen over time if left untreated. Tendonitis affects many adults with active or athletic lifestyles, and can occur around knee joints, hip flexors, wrist, elbow, shoulder, and feet.
Causes
Causes of tendonitis vary greatly due to the different places it can occur in the body. Some individuals might also be prone to tendonitis due to injury, musculoskeletal development, or daily habits that affect their gait and posture such as foot pronation (turning feet or ankles inwards when walking) or slouching.
Some common causes of tendonitis are as follows:
- Vigorous exercise that includes sudden movements like jumping, sprinting, moving up and down in a repetitive manner. These are typical in high intensity or interval training.
- Injury caused by overexertion while exercising or not warming up properly. Outdoor, long distance runners often see tendonitis in the knees due to the repetitive motion of running for great distances on uneven ground.
Symptoms
Symptoms of tendonitis can also vary depending on the part of the body that is affected. Pain in the shoulder joint can manifest differently from knee pain or inflammation of your Achilles tendon. In any scenario, recurring pain that is progressively worsening and does not benefit from rest, or over the counter anti-inflammatory medications should be communicated to a healthcare provider. If symptoms worsen, untreated tendonitis cause long-term damage like a tendon tear which will require surgical intervention.
- Pain or inflammation in the tendons surrounding the joint. This might also mean heightened sensitivity to pain in the area with it being tender to touch.
- Swelling of the tendon or joint. There may also be a feeling of heat as the tendon is inflamed or even redness in the area.
- Tightness in the joint itself and limited range of motion. Being unable to extend your leg or rotate your arm are common symptoms of tendonitis in both of those area.
- A cracking sound or stretched feeling in the joint. This means that the tendon is very inflamed and the joint is not able to move freely due to swelling in the area.
Solutions
Solutions to ease tendonitis include:
- Resting the joint or tendon where the pain is occurring. Cold compresses to reduce swelling or inflammation can help whilst resting.
- Over the counter medications to reduce inflammation and manage pain can also help.
- Support the inflamed area with compression wear like a knee, foot, or ankle brace depending on the tendon/ joint that is affected. Mild compression will help increase blood circulation to the area and provide support to reduce pressure on the tendons.
