Blood Clots and the Benefits of Compression Socks – January 16, 2023

Definition

Blood clots occur when the blood inside your veins clumps together and forms a sort of barrier or seal. Blood clots are helpful when they create a natural stop to a cut or injury causing blood to spill. These blood clots typically dissolve naturally once the cut or injury has healed.

However, blood clots sometimes form inside the veins – either spontaneously or because of pre-existing conditions that can make people more susceptible to them. If these blood clots do not dissolve, and are located in high-risk locations like the brain or legs, they will require medical intervention. Blood clots can also result in serious medical conditions like Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or Pulmonary Embolisms.

Deep Vein Thrombosis is when a blood clot forms in a deep vein (usually in the leg, thigh, pelvis, or arm). This is a very serious clot due to its location, and if left untreated can result in a Pulmonary Embolism (PE) where a part of the clot travels to the lungs. Pulmonary Embolisms (PE’s) can result in lung damage or even death.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) include:

  • Swelling in the leg
  • Cramping, pain, soreness to touch on the leg
  • Feeling heat or warmth on the leg
  • Changing skin color on the leg

Common symptoms of Pulmonary Embolisms occur if the clot formed in deep veins break apart and make their way into the lungs.

  • Increased pulse
  • Labored breathing
  • Worsening chest pain that is exacerbated by deep breaths or coughing
  • Feeling faint, dizzy, and/ or lightheaded
  • Sudden shortness of breath
  • Coughing up blood

In either case, immediately seek medical help or attention. Recognizing symptoms early can play a huge role in a successful and healthy recovery.

Causes

While Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT can occur for no good reason, there are still several risk factors that can increase the risk of getting blood clots.

The primary reason for getting blood clots are any factors that limit blood flow or reduce the ability of the body to clot blood. Infection, injury, and post-surgical complications are all common causes for blood clots.

Risk Factors:

  • Genetic predisposition or family history of blood clots
  • Injury, inflammation, or surgery
  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Oral Contraceptives (birth control pills)
  • Heart conditions
  • Bowel disease like Crohn’s or Colitis
  • Cancer
  • Unhealthy or sedentary lifestyle

How to Reduce Risk

The primary way to mitigate or reduce risk of blood clots falls into 2 main categories.

  1. If you have a health condition or are at risk because you smoke or take oral contraceptives, the most important thing you can do is to familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of DVT or PE. Make sure that you take any symptoms seriously and seek medical attention as soon as possible
  2. The second part is to make daily lifestyle changes that will reduce your risk of blood clots
    1. Ensure that you are moving daily, if not hourly. If your job or daily commute requires you to be sitting for long periods of time, invest in a good pair of compression socks or compression arm braces to help increase blood circulation to those parts of the body, and ensure that the blood is circulating both regularly and consistently.
    2. Note – quality compression wear is both efficient whilst being  comfortable. A well-made compression product is made with breathable fibers and will come in a variety of sizes and compression strengths to ensure that wearers can keep them on for an extended period of time. The benefits of compression wear come from regular, and extended use.
    3. If you are overweight or smoke, try losing weight or cutting back on cigarettes to help reduce your risk factors as well.
